Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong said the principle of incumbency was applied in the by-elections for Pulai and Simpang Jeram last year.

PETALING JAYA: Johor DAP will follow the principle of incumbency for candidate selection and seat allocation, according to state party chairman Liew Chin Tong.

In a statement, Liew said the principle dictates that “seats won in previous general and state elections are contested by the incumbent party in upcoming by-elections”.

He said this approach was previously used during by-elections, including in Pulai and Simpang Jeram last year.

Liew added that Johor DAP adheres to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) practice of internal decision-making for candidate selection and seat allocation, without involving media discussions.

“The leadership (of each component party in PH) should make decisions without any speculation or public demand in the media,” he said.

“Seat negotiations will be determined by the PH and Barisan Nasional leadership, and Johor DAP will respect the decisions made.”

Liew’s statement followed a demand from Kluang Amanah earlier today for the opportunity to contest the upcoming by-election for the Mahkota seat in Johor.

The division’s chief Zuhan Zain said the call was based on Amanah’s victory in the seat during the 14th general election (GE14) and its participation in last August’s state polls, Berita Harian reported.

Zuhan also expressed confidence that a PH candidate could win the Mahkota seat comfortably based on data from the last general election (GE15).

Former Johor Wanita Umno chief Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain won the Mahkota seat in a four-cornered contest at the 2022 state elections with a majority of 5,166 votes.

Before that, Amanah’s Said Jonit won the seat at GE14 in a three-cornered fight by a majority of 1,668 votes.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday said that his party was prepared to contest the Mahkota by-election following the death of Sharifah Azizah on Friday.

Sharifah Azizah was hospitalised last Wednesday due to shortness of breath.

The Election Commission will meet next Tuesday to set the dates for the by-election.
