PETALING JAYA: The offer by Perikatan Nasional’s candidate for the Nenggiri by-election, Rizwadi Ismail, to appoint an officer from within the Orang Asli community is appealing because no other party has made such a promise before, a Kelantan Orang Asli NGO leader said.
However, Kelantan Orang Asli Village Network deputy chairman Nasir Dollah remains sceptical about this “reward” and warns that it should not be just a ploy to appease the community ahead of the by-election on Saturday.
Nasir said if Rizwadi wins, he would have at least four years to fulfil his promises, and if he fails to carry them out, “he will be punished by the Orang Asli in Nenggiri” in the next election.
“If these promises are not fulfilled, then as voters, we can punish him in the next election. We are the ones who can lift him up, so we are also the ones who can bring him down,” he told FMT.
Nevertheless, Nasir said PN’s manifesto is appealing to the Orang Asli in Nenggiri because such a promise (appointing an Orang Asli officer) has never been made before.

“This appointment will serve as a link between the Orang Asli community here and the state government, but we are concerned that the appointed person might just be a figurehead,” he said, commenting on the manifesto, themed “Khidmat”, which makes several offers to the Orang Asli community.
He said the appointed person needs to have integrity to ensure that every issue raised is properly resolved, noting that this step is in line with actions taken by the governments of Selangor and Perak.
According to him, appointing an Orang Asli leader could serve as a bridge to address issues.
Rizwadi also promised to empower the role of Orang Asli village heads in coordinating the welfare of the community, upgrade access roads to Orang Asli villages, and establish a special education team.
It is estimated that of the 20,259 voters in the state constituency, 2,843 are Orang Asli.
Rizwadi, who joined Bersatu from PAS recently, will face Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani of Barisan Nasional in a straight fight in the by-election.
