Umno Youth, Wanita lobby for Mahkota seat
KUALA LUMPUR: Two Umno wings are lobbying for its members to defend the Mahkota seat in the by-election next month.
Umno Youth has proposed the wing’s Kluang chief, Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah, as the candidate, while Wanita Umno is demanding that they contest the state seat.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh said they would help Syed Hussein win, just as they had helped Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani in the recently concluded Nenggiri by-election.
“Any Supreme Council member here, please take note, Umno Youth is nominating Syed Hussein as the Mahkota candidate.”
However, Akmal stated that the wing would accept if their proposed candidate was not selected. He said Umno Youth will continue to work to secure the youth vote in Mahkota.

“We will accept whoever is chosen, but Umno Youth’s stance is that if given this seat, we already have a candidate in mind,” he said.
“Regardless of the outcome, we will abide by the party’s stance because the Umno candidate will surely be the best choice.”
Wanita Umno, meanwhile, said the wing should be given the chance to defend the Mahkota seat so it could preserve the legacy of its incumbent, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, who died on Aug 2.
The wing’s chief, Noraini Ahmad, said they have members with great potential to be selected as candidates for the by-election on Sept 28.
“We want to win Mahkota, so we are demanding that the seat be given to a woman,” she said when wrapping up the debates at the Wanita Umno general assembly.

Noraini said that it was a Wanita Umno member who had wrested the seat back for the party in the last Johor polls.
“Even though it was a tough fight, a Wanita Umno member won the seat in a four-corner battle with a 5,166-vote majority. What further proof is needed?”
Sharifah won the seat in 2022 over her closest rival from Amanah in a four-cornered contest that included candidates from Perikatan Nasional and Warisan.
Last week, Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his coalition had decided on its candidate for the Mahkota by-election.
The Umno president said the candidate would be revealed after discussions at this week’s unity government secretariat meeting, and that a fresh face would be fielded.
