KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will actively evaluate the performance of its elected representatives to assess their service to the people, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said this assessment will help determine whether lawmakers should be renominated for the next round of elections.

Ahmad Zahid announced this decision following a request from the party’s youth wing for a monitoring committee to oversee their elected representatives.

“Umno must have leaders who are dedicated to serving the people, and there’s no two ways about it,” he said.

In his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly, Ahmad Zahid instructed party secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki to oversee the evaluation of the lawmakers.

He also emphasised the importance of leveraging social media and technology to engage with voters and the community, citing the effective use of these tools in the Nenggiri by-election campaign.

Additionally, Ahmad Zahid directed the party’s youth, wanita and puteri wings to take a leading role in addressing social issues such as violence and cyberbullying.

He noted the rising incidence of these problems and urged the wings to initiate campaigns aimed at reducing such occurrences before things get worse.

“I want the three wings to champion causes and take on campaigns to reduce incidents of violence and other social ills,” he said.

Meanwhile, party deputy president Datuk Mohamad Hasan cautioned Umno members that the success in the recent Nenggiri by-election does not guarantee an easy win in the upcoming Mahkota by-election.

He stressed the need for continued effort, as conditions in Mahkota will be different.

“Do not think that just because we won Nenggiri by over 5,000 votes that it automatically ensures an easy victory in Mahkota. The playing field and style of play will be different,” said Mohamad in his winding-up speech.

Polling for the Mahkota state seat in Johor, which was declared vacant following the death of assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain is on Sept 28.

Addressing delegates at the end of the general assembly, party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Umno needs friends, who are open to sharing power, to ensure Malaysia’s success.

“The reality is that Umno cannot rule alone. We need allies and must always be open to cooperation for a successful Malaysia.

“While Umno cannot compel others to join Barisan Nasional as component parties, we can still cooperate closely with other parties,” he added.

Fellow vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani highlighted the need for Umno to strengthen itself to reverse the fate of the Malays and bumiputra.

He pointed to statistics on bumiputra employment and businesses, underscoring the need for political power to effect change.

“There is no other way than making Umno strong again so we change this trend for the future. Beginning with Nenggiri, we will work on reversing everything for the future,” Johari said.

Finally, Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail called for Umno representatives to set a high standard in their constituencies by delivering exceptional service to the people.

“We have to lead the way when it comes to social and economic development while also providing exemplary services to the people,” said Wan Rosdy, who is also a vice-president.
