PETALING JAYA: The two female Muslim divers from Terengganu who won the bronze medal at the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma) will still receive an incentive although their participation was not sanctioned by the state government.

Menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the sum had yet to be decided, Sinar Harian reported.

“I am still waiting for a full report of our achievements,” he said, referring to the Terengganu Sukma contingent.

“This report will include an explanation from those who sent (the women divers) without going through the state government and we will make our decision after that,” he was quoted as saying.

Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf and Ilyssa Ixora Imran won the bronze medal in the 10m platform synchronised diving category, while Uzlifatil also won bronze in the 1m springboard category.

Agenda Bebaskan Najib: Retorik Dalam Keikhlasan Atau Keikhlasan Dalam Retorik?

Yesterday, the Terengganu Amateur Swimming Association apologised for sending two Muslim girls to represent the state in the diving competition at the 21st Sukma without the state government’s nod.

The association’s apology follows the remarks by youth and sports executive councillor Hishamuddin Abdul Karim who expressed shock that the two girls had taken part in the competition.

Hishamuddin said the Terengganu sports council’s stand was that no female Muslims can represent the state in diving as the attire did not meet the state’s dress code for Muslim athletes.

In 2018, Terengganu made it a requirement for state athletes to wear shariah-compliant clothing, both at home and while taking part in outstation events.

Four years later, it banned women from taking part in gymnastics events because of non-shariah-compliant outfits, forcing several Muslim female gymnasts from the state to retire from the sport.
