PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has reminded Barisan Nasional (BN) not to become complacent following the coalition’s victory in the Nenggiri state by-election.

BN reclaimed the Nenggiri state seat in Kelantan when its candidate, Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, won with a majority of 3,352 votes in a straight fight against Perikatan Nasional’s Rizwadi Ismail.

Mohamad stressed that every election is unique, particularly when considering the demographic differences of various areas, Bernama reported.

“Let’s not get carried away by the 3,000-over majority win in the Nenggiri by-election and feel that we can also win the upcoming Mahkota (Johor) by-election comfortably,” said Mohamad, who is also known as Tot Mat.

“Nenggiri is a rural area, and almost 99% of the residents are Malays. As for Mahkota, it is an urban area where the residents are multiracial, with Malays making up 57% of the residents, Chinese 34% and Indians 7%.

“It is a multiracial constituency with a different background compared to Nenggiri. The voters too have different opinions,” he told reporters during a state assembly programme in Rembau.

The Rembau MP said over 50% of the Mahkota constituency’s voters are young and aged below 40 and, as such, BN needs to take a different approach in their campaign.

Noting that young voters are often influenced by social media, Mohamad said BN and the unity government’s machinery must work hard to get their messages across on such platforms.

Mohamad also said he has asked Kluang Umno and Johor Umno to shortlist the names of candidates.

“God willing, we have many candidates with calibre in BN. However, we will choose one who can fulfil the needs of the voters in Mahkota,” he said.

The nomination for the Mahkota by-election will fall on Sept 14, with the polling day set for Sept 28 and early voting on Sept 24.

The by-election follows the death of Umno assemblyman, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, on Aug 2.

At the Johor state election in 2022, Sharifah won the seat with a 5,166-vote majority over Amanah’s Taqiuddin Cheman who contested on the Pakatan Harapan ticket.
