PETALING JAYA: The clauses drawn up in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on allocations for the opposition MPs are mere excuses by the Madani government not to give the allocation, says PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

He said that the MOU does not correspond with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement last July in the Dewan Rakyat that the government was ready to provide allocation to the opposition MPs and there is no condition to support him.

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also the opposition chief for the Pahang state assembly said that it is illogical for the government to hold on to the opposition MPs’ allocation when Pakatan Harapan was the one who mooted the idea when they were then in the opposition.

“The PAS MPs had studied the MOU draft which was given by Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to us. We are rejecting it based on the main principle that the clauses are unconstitutional and against the provisions of the country’s laws.

“The PAS muktamar (general assembly) too have rejected the MOU unanimously as it does not correspond with what the Prime Minister announced in the Parliament last July (that he was ready to offer the allocation to the Opposition MPs).

“The current Madani government cannot be trusted where providing allocation for the opposition MPs was part of their war cry when they were in the opposition.

“If Kelantan, Kedah, Perak and Selangor could provide allocations to the opposition state assemblymen without any conditions attached, why does the Federal Government set illogical conditions?

“To Perikatan Nasional, this MOU draft is a mere excuse not to give the opposition MPs the allocations which are their constitutional right,” said Tuan Ibrahim.

Earlier Sunday (Sept 15), Parliament Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin stated that Perikatan has unanimously rejected the MOU regarding allocations for its MPs and identified four key reasons for its rejection.

Hamzah cited the four reasons as being unconstitutional, contradictory to cultural, moral, and religious principles, abuse of power and curtailing of democratic freedom.
