More rain, thunderstorms in Baling
KUALA LUMPUR: Rain and thunderstorms could still occur in the evenings in Baling, Kedah, in the next few days.
Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the projection was based on the squall line formation, especially along the coastal areas of the state.
Squall line, said Muhammad Helmi, would lead to the creation of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as well as strong winds in the evening that have the possibility to prolong until early in the night.
“Although MetMalaysia predicted fine weather in the morning and at night, rain as well as thunderstorm have the potential to occur in the evening in the Baling district,” he told the New Straits Times.
Muhammad Helmi was asked to comment on the weather prediction for the Baling district, which was recently hit by floods, in the next few days.
Based on the squall line formations, he said MetMalaysia also predicted rain and thunderstorms in several parts of Kedah in the next few days.
“A similar weather pattern is also predicted for other states in the West Coast of the Peninsular as well as Sabah in the morning because of the squall line phenomenon.
“In the evening, rain and thunderstorms are more concentrated in some states along the East Coast of the Peninsular such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, east Johor as well as Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan,” he said.
Muhammad Helmi said the atmosphere is more stable with the lack of rain formation in the evening for Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Melaka as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
“Therefore, MetMalaysia expects no extreme weather will occur at these states and federal territories,” he said.
