HULU SELANGOR – It was no easy task for the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to save and recover those who were missing in the search and rescue (SAR) efforts of the Batang Kali landslide tragedy.

As such Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division Officer, Senior Assistant Fire Chief, Juyana @ Azlan Musa shared his experience of recovering the 11-year-old boy who was the last victim of the mishap.

Juyana said the final day of search was focused on Sector A area where the bodies of his father and sister were found.

As he was resting under a tree after searching the area for several hours, he noticed a peculiar flow of some kind liquid running through the soil.

“When I was sleeping, I have thought of many possibilities of us recovering the last victim and that the family’s pain of losing a son will be eased.

“After I woke up, I kept searching the area with renewed determination until I found some peculiar black liquid flowing from the soil,” he told Sinar Harian on Monday.

Juyana immediately informed his higher officials about the discovery before digging up there area.

“We started digging around the area where I found the liquid and we found some fabric.

“I pulled out the cloth and that’s when I smelled the foul smell, we dugged continously until we found the remains of the boy,” he added.

Rescue team members brought the landslide tragedy victims’ bodies.
It was a mixed feeling when the body was recovered after the ninth day, he added.

“This wasn’t an easy task. We were shouldering the hopes of the families and Malaysians to find all those who were lost.

“At the same time, I am very proud because, as a firefighter, we successfully carried out this difficult and challenging mission,” he said.

Juyana said there were no tips and practices except praying to Allah before each time the search mission for victims begins.

“There are no tips whatsover, every time before I start my task for the day, I always pray for SAR mission to go smoothly, and most importantly, I place my hope and strength in Allah.

“At the same time, I will ensure that I am ready to overcome any obstacles and challenges when the operation is carried out,” he said.

On Dec 16, 92 victims were involved in a landslide tragedy at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite, Jalan Genting- Batang Kali here.

A total of 61 of them survived, while 31 died, icluding 18 adults and 13 children.

The SAR operation involved a total of 80 personnel, including 27 from JBPM, 25 Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), eight Malaysian Civil Defense Forces (APM), and three Malaysian Special Search and Rescue Teams (SMART).

In addition, ten tracking dogs and nine excavators were also mobilised in this SAR operation to locate the last victim of the landslide tragedy.
