Driver of SUV killed after ploughing into Plus vehicle by side of NSE
TAPAH: One person was killed and three others injured in an accident involving four vehicles including a Plus patrol vehicle at Km358.7 of the North-South Expressway near Sungkai here, today.
The 4.40pm incident involved a Toyota Hilux owned by Plus, a Suzuki Swift, a Mazda CX5 and a Kia Optima.
The accident caused a 9km-long traffic crawl along the expressway.
Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the 71-year-old driver of the Mazda CX5 was killed on the spot, while the front seat passenger suffered severe injuries.
“Initial investigations found that the Plus patrol vehicle had stopped in the emergency lane to assist the driver of the Suzuki Swift as the car had a flat tyre.
“However, the Mazda CX5 which came from the same direction crashed into the rear of the Plus patrol vehicle and caused the latter to crash into the rear of the Suzuki Swift.
“The Kia Optima which was also from the same direction could not brake on time and rammed into ithe Mazda” he said in a statement today.
Yusri said the passenger of the Mazda was rushed to Slim River Hospital for treatment.
“Also injured in the accident was the driver of the Plus patrol vehicle and a passenger of the Suzuki Swift,” he said adding that both were also taken to the same hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
