DAP will do their utmost to honour their undertaking in the MoU

Pakatan Harapan, including DAP, will do its utmost to honour its commitment in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with the government, says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

The Iskandar Puteri MP said, however, that there is no guarantee that the MoU signed between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and PH leaders on Monday would successfully usher Malaysia into a new political landscape.

In a statement today, Lim said the MoU had evoked a “whole spectrum of reactions”, including fear that it marked the end of the opposition in Parliament.

“Undoubtedly, the MoU can fail as it will depend on both sides keeping to their bargain.

“DAP and PH will do their utmost to honour their undertaking in the MoU because we cannot allow the Covid-19 pandemic to continue to ravage lives and livelihoods in Malaysia, causing over two million cases and a toll of over 22,000 lives in 21 months,” he said.

He said this was why a “political ceasefire” was necessary in the next 10 to 18 months to unite Malaysians to “single-mindedly win the losing war against Covid-19 and overcome the existential threat posed by the pandemic”.

Lim also said the MoU would not mean the end of the opposition because the PH MPs would continue to be “as articulate and outspoken for justice, freedom, progress and unity as ever”.

“We want to fulfil the Malaysian dream to become a world-class nation and to bring to fruition the aspiration of Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman for Malaysia to be a ‘beacon of light in a difficult and distracted world’,” he said.

”But Malaysians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, region or politics, must ensure that the MoU gives Malaysia the historic opportunity to reset the country for economic, social and national recovery in the post-pandemic era.”

Lim also hoped that Warisan, Pejuang and MUDA would support the MoU and sign a similar one with the government.
