Teacher sparks new Covid-19 cluster in Ranau
Sabah recorded another Covid-19 educational institution cluster, this time involving a teacher as an index case.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Masidi Manjun said the Timbua Debut Cluster in Ranau district had detected 32 positive cases so far.
“The 37-year-old male teacher of SMK Timbua was tested positive via self-screening on Dec 3. Further screenings among his close contacts found 31 others being infected including family members, colleagues and students.
“All the patients have been isolated and are undergoing treatment,” he said in a statement today.
Masidi said among the localities involved in the said cluster were the SMK Timbua hostel, the SMK Timbua quarters and SMA Mohd Ali staff quarters.
This was the fifth Covid-19 cluster linked to educational institutions detected since last month.
The other three educational institution clusters were Sungai Batang in Sandakan, Kemburungoh, in Ranau and Mantailang Atas in Tenom.
However, only three educational institution clusters out of five detected were still active.
While most of the teenage and adult population had been fully vaccinated, he urged them to continue to be mindful of the standard operating procedures.
Today, Sabah recorded 329 new cases, seven more than yesterday.
The state also registered three deaths – one each in Kota Kinabalu, Kota Marudu and Tuaran.
