Fadillah explains why Mukah MP absent for vote on Speaker
PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MP Hanifah Hajar Taib was absent during the Dewan Rakyat’s voting on the Speaker because of health reasons, says coalition leader Fadillah Yusof.
The deputy prime minister told FMT that Hanifah was not feeling well earlier and this had delayed her journey to Parliament for its first sitting following the 15th general election.
“She is (now) present in Parliament but could not make it in time for the voting,” he said.
Earlier, former Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul was elected as the new Speaker.
The PKR man takes over from Azhar Harun, who officially stepped down yesterday.
Johari had been nominated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, while opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin had nominated Radzi Sheikh Ahmad for the post.
Johari received 147 votes, while Radzi obtained 74 votes. The total is one short of the 222 MPs in the lower house.
According to Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong earlier, Hanifah was absent for the vote.
However, the deputy economic affairs minister was present to take her oath of office as the Mukah MP.
