Former bank officer fined RM8,000 over credit card fraud

TAIPING: A former bank marketing officer was fined RM8,000 by the magistrate’s court here today for defrauding his employer by approving a customer’s credit card for his own use last November.

Magistrate Nur Atiqah Sapari meted out the fine to Leong Yew Hong, who pleaded guilty to the charge.



The 31-year-old man, who was then an executive marketing officer, was accused of defrauding his employer by approving a credit card in the name of a 41-year-old customer.

The accused, who was responsible for managing credit card applications and approvals, committed the offence on Nov 27 last year.

The offence under Section 418 of the Penal Code carries a sentence of seven years’ jail or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun prosecuted, and the accused was represented by Puteri Hikmatul Raudah Dzulaika Mohamad, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.



Nur Atiqa ordered the accused to be sentenced to eight months’ jail if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, the victim filed a complaint with the bank after the Central Credit Reference Information System showed that a credit card had been issued in his name with transactions amounting to RM8,564.40.

Investigations by the bank’s investigation manager revealed that the accused had 17 credit cards belonging to other customers after obtaining customer information during a credit card promotion in Taiping.

The accused made the applications for the cards by using the customers’ identity card and Employees’ Provident Fund information.
