Daim is not our biggest funder, says Muda

KUALA LUMPUR: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin is not Muda’s biggest funder, said the party’s acting president, Amira Aisya Abd Aziz.

She said this when asked if Daim is among the party’s funders.

Amira said Muda has a strict internal funding structure in which a donor can only contribute a maximum of RM200,000 at any one time.

“Anyone who wants to say that Daim is Muda’s ‘godfather’ or biggest funder … that is definitely not true,” she told reporters after a forum at the Advance Tertiary College here today.

Amira also confirmed that Daim’s wife, Naimah Khalid, is a Muda member.

She later told FMT that Daim is not a Muda member.

Amira also said it was unfair to question Muda’s source of funding since there is no political financing Act in Malaysia.

“If anyone wants to question Muda about our political funding, we have been very consistent in saying that Malaysia needs a political funding Act. All the other parties should (push for this) too,” she said.

‘Naimah is also a personal friend of mine’

Addressing photos circulating on social media of her and Naimah at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on Jan 23, Amira said she was there to support Naimah as she is a Muda member.

“I will pay this (same) respect to any party member. She (Naimah) is also a personal friend of mine,” she said.

Naimah was charged with failing to comply with a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission asset declaration notice on Jan 23.

She was accused of failing to declare her ownership of companies, several plots of land in Kuala Lumpur and in Penang, as well as two vehicles.

Daim faced a similar charge on Jan 29, when he was accused of failing to declare his ownership in 38 companies, 19 plots of land in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur, as well as six properties.

He is also alleged to have failed to declare his ownership of Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) and Amanah Saham Nasional (ASN) accounts as well as seven luxury vehicles.

If found guilty, Daim and Naimah face a jail term of up to five years and a fine of not more than RM100,000.
