HQ will decide, Mat Sabu tells Kluang division
PETALING JAYA: Amanah’s Kluang division has been reminded that it is the national leadership that decides on election candidates, after the division demanded that it be allowed to field a candidate in a forthcoming by-election.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the decision to field a candidate for the Mahkota state seat will be made by party leaders at the national level.
He said Amanah members can express their views, but the final decision rests with the national leadership, Bernama reported.
“That’s an opinion, not a decision, our members are free to voice their opinion. However, the decision will be made by leaders at the national level,” he said in Gua Musang today.
Last Monday, Kluang Amanah had demanded to field a candidate for the Mahkota by-election. Divisional leader Zuhan Zain said the call was based on Amanah’s victory in the 2022 general election and its participation in the state elections last August.

Yesterday, Johor Umno deputy chief Ahmad Maslan was reported to have said Amanah’s demands could be negotiated.
The Election Commission will meet on Aug 13 to decide the dates for the Mahkota by-election, triggered by the death of assembly member Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
Sharifah won the seat with a 5,166-vote majority over Amanah’s Taqiuddin Cheman at the 2022 Johor elections. Kluang Umno chief Jais Sarday held the seat from 2008 to 2018, when he was defeated by Amanah’s Said Jonit.
