Abuse of tourist visas led to KLIA ring, says MACC source
PETALING JAYA: The abuse of tourist visas by foreign nationals is what spawned the syndicate that brought in foreigners without undergoing proper immigration checks at KLIA, says a source.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission source said many groups of foreign nationals, particularly from Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, would enter the country as tourists but work illegally.
He said this led to the establishment of the “counter setting” syndicate, which would bribe enforcement officers to set up special counters so that groups of foreigners can enter Malaysia without the proper checks.
“This syndicate does not use the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS) which registers and monitors migrant workers in the country. This abuse of tourist visas is rampant,” said the source.
He said the foreigners could obtain work permits through illegal channels by paying the syndicate between RM6,000 and RM12,000 each.

MACC intelligence division director Zainul Darus confirmed the matter when contacted.
Previously, MACC chief Azam Baki said a total of 50 enforcement officers had been arrested – 49 from the immigration department and one from the police – and 37 investigation papers were opened into the KLIA syndicate.
He also said MACC expects to charge a senior immigration officer next month.
The anti-graft agency had also nabbed a Bangladeshi company director on Sunday on suspicion of being involved in the syndicate. He allegedly acted as an agent tasked with bribing enforcement officers.
