PETALING JAYA: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Sumatra, Indonesia at 4am today, with several states in West Malaysia experiencing tremors, said the meteorological department (MetMalaysia)

MetMalaysia director-general Helmi Abdullah said the epicentre of the quake was 85km northwest of Siberut, Indonesia, with a depth of 49km.

“There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” he said in a statement.



Last week, MetMalaysia said a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Beluran in Sabah, with its epicentre 365km north of Tarakan, Indonesia. There was also no tsunami threat from the quake.
