PETALING JAYA: Former chief justice Mohamed Raus Sharif is set to be admitted to the Malaysian Bar this week.

In a media announcement, his long call is scheduled to take place before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh at approximately 9.30am on Wednesday.

Lawyer Hafarizam Harun is slated to lead the call, while former Court of Appeal president Zulkefli Makinuddin is expected to put the ceremonial robe on Raus.

Raus served as the eighth chief justice from April 2017 to July 2018. Prior to that, he had served as the Court of Appeal president from Sept 2011 to April 2017.

In 2017, Raus courted controversy when his tenure as chief justice was extended despite him having reached the mandatory retirement age of 66.
At the time, the Bar Council called the move “unconstitutional,” and had expressed its concern about the potential impact on the public’s confidence in the independence of the judiciary.

He was also appointed by former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob along with two others to the Judicial Appointments Commission in 2022.

Raus was made a judicial commissioner at the Kuala Lumpur High Court in 1994. Two years later, he ascended to the role of a High Court judge, followed by his elevation to the position of a Court of Appeal judge in 2006.
