I only prioritise projects for the people, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he only prioritises projects that would benefit the public and not MPs, in response to Perikatan Nasional’s criticisms that opposition MPs do not receive constituency allocations.

“They (the opposition) would say we are fair if we set aside funds for them, but cruel if we were to channel the monies to the rakyat,” Anwar said at a PKR gathering in Bukit Jalil last night.

Anwar is the PKR president.

“Why should I care for projects for MPs. I care (only) for projects for the people.”

Last Sunday, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin announced that PN had unanimously rejected the unity government’s draft MoU on allocations for opposition MPs, claiming it went against the Federal Constitution.

Hamzah said the draft violated the constitution by including conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras, and stipulations that allegedly went against traditional, cultural and moral values.

On Tuesday, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin singled out a clause that purportedly prohibits discussing issues related to race, religion and royalty (3Rs).

He said it was aimed at restricting the MPs’ freedom to voice their constituents’ concerns, especially on such issues.

Anwar also warned underperforming PKR leaders and elected representatives that they would be replaced.

Last month, FMT reported that another Cabinet shake-up was on the cards.

A well-placed source from PKR said a prominent minister from the party would either be moved to another ministry or dropped from the Cabinet as the said person’s performance has been in question.
