PETALING JAYA: All pupils in primary and secondary schools are to stay at home and follow lessons in online classes from Jan 20, the education ministry announced this evening in a reversal of an announcement made last week.

It said only those taking public examinations will go back to school when the school year reopens on Jan 20.

However, all kindergartens registered with the ministry, are allowed to continue holding classes.

The ministry said the decision was made after consultation with the health ministry and the National Security Council in the wake of rising numbers of Covid-19 infections. A new record of 4,029 new Covid-19 cases was recorded today, the first time the number of infections has surpassed the 4,000 mark.

The ministry said those allowed to return to school were students taking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, Sijil Vocational Malaysia, Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia, Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia, Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia and Diploma Vokational Malaysia, as well as equivalent international examinations.
