PETALING JAYA: The Malays must be pushed into doing business to attain the level of success enjoyed by other communities, says former law minister Zaid Ibrahim.
In a post on X, Zaid said the first step would be to reduce the number of Malays in the civil service.
“They will not be business-minded as long as they can depend on working for the government.
“We will not produce the Malay mercantile group and tycoons like those found in the Chinese and Indian communities if you keep expanding the civil service.”
He also said the Malays’ economic disadvantage in business is partly due to too much meddling by the authorities on what is permitted and what is forbidden.

“This government should not try to be everything under the sun. Now, we are a nanny state.
“You can either help the Malays be competitive and support their businesses or be their spiritual guide hereafter. No government can do both.”
Religion is a bridge for one to find God, but in Malaysia, many politicians play God, he said.
Zaid also called for an end to the belief that political power will elevate the economic position of the Malays, stating that if this were true, there would be no need for recurring special economic congresses and new Bumiputera agendas.
“Malay political power only means well-connected Malays can run big businesses for the government.
“Some are just rent-seekers because there is a more successful non-Malay behind every successful Malay.

“That’s why non-Bumiputera companies flourish in a system where one race ostensibly is in charge,” he added.
In August, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (Putera35) in hopes of elevating the status of the Bumiputeras in line with the Madani economic framework’s aspirations.
Putera35 encompasses three core areas, 12 growth drivers and 132 comprehensive initiatives aimed at empowering and advancing Bumiputera development.
