Agong conveys condolences to Turkiye president and people over earthquake
KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah expressed his condolences to Turkiye president President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and its people following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region of Kahramanmaras in Turkey last week.
The King, before commencing his official speech on the first meeting of the second term of the 15th Parliament sitting, invited members of parliament to take a moment of silence for the victims of the earthquake.
A strong earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit southern Turkey and northwestern Syria on Feb 6, claiming thousands of lives in both countries. The effects of the earthquake were also reported to be felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.
The death toll from the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey has risen to more than 34,000.
On Tuesday, Turkiye declared a three-month state of emergency for 10 provinces: Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurf.
