Puad slams Muhyiddin, defends Umno’s request for Najib’s pardon
PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has slammed Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin for accusing Umno of using “political pressure” to push for a royal pardon for its former president, Najib Razak.
Puad said Umno’s decision to ask the King to pardon Najib was in “political solidarity” with the former prime minister, adding that they were ultimately leaving it to the King’s discretion.
“(This is) in accordance with Articles 42(1) and 42(2) of the Federal Constitution,” he said, adding that the King has the authority to “grant pardons, reprieves and respites” to prisoners convicted of offences committed in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
Puad also said Muhyiddin should know the King does not bow to political pressure, citing the Bersatu president’s failure to obtain an extension to the emergency in 2021 when he was the prime minister.
He accused Muhyiddin of applying political pressure to get the emergency extended and keep Parliament suspended. “However, this failed and (Muhyiddin’s request) was rejected (by the King).”

Puad also accused Muhyiddin of again applying political pressure on the King by claiming he had the support to form the government after the 15th general election (GE15).
“(Muhyiddin) rejected forming a unity government. But the King was wise and did not succumb to political pressure.
“The reality is that Muhyiddin’s claim (that Umno was applying political pressure to push for Najib’s pardon) is political pressure in itself to prevent a royal pardon (for Najib),” he said.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin reportedly accused Umno of applying political pressure to push for Najib’s pardon.
On Friday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had asked the King to consider granting Najib a pardon.
Najib began serving his 12-year prison sentence on Aug 23, 2022 after he was found guilty of criminal breach of trust, power abuse and money laundering involving RM42 million of funds belonging to SRC International.
His bid to review his conviction and sentence was also rejected by a five-member Federal Court panel in a majority decision.
Najib is seeking to use the dissenting judgment by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Abdul Rahman Sebli, the sole dissenting judge on the panel, to support his application for a royal pardon.
