RM405,000 worth of rice seized from unlicensed warehouse

PETALING JAYA: A special task force seized a hidden stash of local white rice worth about RM405,000 in an unlicensed storage warehouse yesterday.
The agriculture and food security ministry said a total of 180 tonnes of SST (5% broken grains) local rice were stored in jumbo sacks and hidden inside a warehouse belonging to an unlicensed rice mill.
The case will be investigated under the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 and the Control of Padi and Rice Regulations 1996 related to the licensing of rice mills.
If convicted, the operator can be fined up to RM25,000 if it is their first offence. The director-general of padi and rice control may cancel or suspend its licence as well.
“I want to issue a stern warning to all parties to comply with the established laws. The ministry and task force will take strong action against anyone found to have violated existing regulations,” said deputy agriculture and food security minister Chan Foong Hin in a statement.
The special task force was led by Chan and comprised officers from the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, the quarantine and inspection services department, the padi and rice regulatory unit and the police.
