Court fines ex-MP RM100 for using insulting words
PETALING JAYA: Former Kapar MP S Manikavasagam was fined RM100 by the Shah Alam magistrates’ court today after pleading guilty to a charge of using insulting words in January.
Magistrate Sasha Diana Sabtu ordered Manikavasagam, 59, to be jailed for three days if he failed to pay the fine, which he settled, Harian Metro reported.
The former Kuala Selangor PKR chief was found to have behaved rudely towards another person by sending an insulting message with intent to incite anger and breach the peace.
According to Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, any person who uses any indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, or whereby a breach of the peace is likely to be occasioned, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM100.
Manikavasagam was accused of committing the offence at a house in Subang Jaya at 3.27pm on Jan 4.
In mitigation, he informed the court he now held a sight disability card, but was ready to pay the fine.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Annur Athirah Amran, while Manikavasagam was not represented.
Manikavasagam served as MP for Kapar for a single term from 2008 to 2013.
He resigned from his post as Kuala Selangor PKR chief and left the party in April 2018 after his membership was suspended in August 2017.
