BN-PH should maintain healthy competition, says Johor DAP man
PETALING JAYA: Unity government allies, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) should compete against each other at elections, but work together to help Johoreans, a state DAP leader said.
“The philosophies of PH and BN are not exactly the same, but after the establishment of the unity government at the federal level, both coalitions can still cooperate in the common interests of the country and the people.
“Therefore, Johor can progress steadfastly if intercoalition cooperation and healthy competition are maintained between PH and BN,” Johor DAP state committee member Dr Boo Cheng Hau said in a statement today.
Boo said this would not be the first time this had happened in Malaysia, as former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein formed and held a unity government together during his tenure in the top office.
He said that at the state level, BN is the ruling coalition in Johor while PH provides checks and balances in the opposition.

He said such a relationship benefitted the country’s democracy and would be in the best interests of those in Johor.
Meanwhile, he said Johor PH should continue working to retake the state with a larger majority than it had in 2018, adding that the “incumbency theory” is not in the coalition’s long-term interests.
“According to this theory, Johor DAP can only contest its current 10 state seats in the next by-election or state election.
“This means that DAP will never be able to win back any of the 14 seats it had previously, while PKR and Amanah will only be allowed to contest one seat each,” he said.
He called for those concerned to put aside self-beneficial strategies that would undermine PH and strengthen its competitors.

On Monday, Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong said the state chapter would follow the principle of incumbency for candidate selection and seat allocation.
His statement followed a demand from Kluang Amanah for the opportunity to contest the upcoming by-election for the Mahkota seat in Johor.
The seat was previously held by former Johor Wanita Umno chief Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, who died last Friday.
