Don’t blame non-Muslims for corruption, says deputy IGP

PETALING JAYA: Deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has criticised attempts by certain quarters to turn corruption into a racial issue.

Ayob said some people, whom he did not name, had questioned why the authorities were not arresting bribe-givers, who are allegedly predominantly non-Muslims.

“Even this (issue of corruption) has been turned into a racial issue,” he said in a video of his speech posted on his Facebook page.

“If we (Muslims) truly have strong faith, we wouldn’t take bribes. There is no need to blame others. There is no need to blame non-Muslims.”

Ayob argued that people should report corruption to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and be accountable for their actions instead of pointing fingers.

“This is what I mean when I say those who distort the facts to question the actions of the MACC or government agencies are wrong,” he said.

In 2022, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang attributed the “root of corruption” to non-Muslims, which led to multiple police reports and an investigation.

PAS leader Zuhdi Marsuki came to Hadi’s defence by referencing a university survey from 2010 to 2014 that supposedly indicated that non-Malays were the most frequently convicted for bribery. However, he did not specify which survey he was referring to.

Ayob also condemned those who accepted bribes, calling them among the most “heinous” (“paling jahat”) individuals.

“They think there’s nothing wrong in taking bribes. Many people take bribes; many officials are involved in bribery. Nowadays, everyone is a bribe-taker,” he said.

“They are trying to justify their actions. These are truly the most wicked people.”
