SHAH ALAM – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has voiced her deep frustration and concern over the disqualification of Malaysian cyclist Datuk Azizulhasni Awang at Paris Olympics yesterday, emphasising that his well-being is her top priority following the controversial decision.

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Yeoh stressed that her primary concern after Azizulhasni’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics keirin event is the cyclist’s welfare.

“I am angry at the decision to disqualify Azizulhasni. Did the team appeal? Yes, but the decision to disqualify him was final.

“I have only one priority for Azizulhasni Awang—his well-being after this incident.

“From day one, I never had to worry about this athlete and his hunger for excellence. He is driven, hardworking, and professional,” Yeoh said.

She also addressed the public’s reactions and the emotional impact on Azizulhasni and his team, noting that the disqualification has been difficult for everyone involved, especially parents explaining the situation to their children.

“For parents watching the race with their children, who are now asking ‘What happened?’ and ‘Why?’, please take the time to explain it to them.

“It’s not going to be easy, but you must help them process it, even as you struggle to accept it yourself. In sports, the rules will bind you.

“For the rest of us, be kind to Azizulhasni and his team during this difficult time. Especially so for his young family.

“The many sacrifices the family had to make over many years of not having him around because of training hours and competitions abroad. Be kind with your words,” she said.

Yeoh reaffirmed her support for Azizulhasni, affectionately known as the ‘Pocket Rocketman.’

“Azizulhasni our Pocket Rocketman, I will always be supportive of your decision to race because you remain one of the finest athletes Malaysia has.

“Your wellbeing is now my priority for you. We love you,” she said.

Yeoh’s comments came after Azizulhasni’s disqualification from the men’s keirin race at the Paris Olympics yesterday for overtaking the derny before it left the track.

The Malaysian delegation, led by Chef de Mission Datuk Hamidin Amin, did appeal the disqualification, but the decision was upheld.

Despite the setback, Malaysia found some consolation as Shah Firdaus Sahrom, Azizulhasni’s teammate, advanced to the quarterfinals after a strong performance in his first-round repechage.
