Perlis PAS man unfazed by possible action for criticising party leaders
Perlis PAS information chief Saifizi Saidon claimed that the issues he raised at the party’s 70th muktamar were backed by three party divisions.

PETALING JAYA: Perlis PAS information chief Saifizi Saidon is standing by his criticism of certain party leaders at its muktamar last week, unfazed by the possibility of being subjected to disciplinary action.

Saifizi said he spoke out to prevent controversies surrounding several party leaders from hampering its efforts to lead the administration of other states.

He also claimed the issues he raised at PAS’s 70th muktamar reflected the views of the party’s Kangar, Padang Besar and Arau divisions, and were not merely his personal opinion.

“As an Islamic party, we must undertake some introspection rather than reject criticism outright,” he told FMT.

He said PAS must learn to take criticism in a positive light if it hopes to govern the nation one day.

Currently, PAS leads the Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu governments.

During the muktamar last week, Saifizi said PAS appeared to have strayed from its principles, noting that members have in the past been suspended even for trivial matters such as dancing.

On the other hand, PAS leaders who shook hands with women and took part in karaoke sessions were defended by their colleagues.

He also questioned the party’s commitment to upholding integrity, citing the absence of a formal report from either the state liaison body or PAS headquarters regarding issues involving Perlis menteri besar Shukri Ramli.

Shukri, the Perlis PAS chief, has faced calls to step down as menteri besar after his son, Syafeeq, was charged in May with pocketing more than RM19,000 in false claims for the supply of drinks to the Raja of Perlis.

Yesterday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said a viral media statement claiming that Saifizi had been suspended was fake. However, he said the remarks Saifizi made were being “looked at” by the party.
