KLIA shooting: Kedah police set up roadblocks to nab suspect

SUNGAI PETANI: Kedah police have intensified surveillance operations at border checkpoints to prevent the suspect involved in a shooting incident at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today from escaping the country.

Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said state police are fully prepared to assist if the suspect is found in the state.

He said that all border enforcement elements, including the General Operations Force (GOF) and the armed forces are on high alert.

“In this context, Kedah police will provide support by channeling any information obtained regarding the suspect.

“Roadblocks have been set up in border areas. Kedah police will continue to tighten controls to ensure the suspect does not escape to neighbouring countries,” he said during a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters here today.

Earlier today, a man was left seriously injured after being shot at the KLIA Terminal 1.

The incident occurred at 1.30am at the arrival hall.

Police said the gunman was believed to be aiming at his wife, who is also his business partner.

The gunman had fired two shots, with one of them hitting the woman’s bodyguard.

The suspect then fled the scene and is believed to have headed north.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, identified as Hafizul Harawi, 38.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain warned the public not to approach the suspect or to take the law into their own hands.

The authorities have ruled out any links to terrorist activities or groups, saying the incident was due to a personal dispute.
