Pump house upgrade to be ready in mid-January

THE upgrading work of Taman Sentul Jaya pump house in Butterworth, Penang, is expected to be completed by the middle of this month.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) has allocated almost RM1mil to upgrade the 500 cubic meter per second capacity of the existing pump in Taman Sentul Jaya.

He said the pump would be able to alleviate the floods in that area and several locations in Bukit Minyak.

“As a state government and now in the Federal Government, we are always finding solutions to mitigate flood problems for the public,” he said after visiting the mitigation project.

Accompanying Chow during the visit were Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, Central Seberang Prai district officer Kamarul Haizal Koderat, MBSP assistant engineer Ahmad Akmal Abu Bakar and several other MBSP councillors.

Chow also visited the Taman Mangga pump house and held discussions with stakeholders on the frequent flash floods in the area.

The most recent flash flood, he said, was caused by river water backflow although the Taman Mangga pump house functioned well during the incident.

He said as the main river was overflowing and resulted in backflow leading to several areas being flooded.

“Those pumps were not able to prevent water from re-entering the drainage and caused the floods,” he said.

Chow said the state government could not make promises beyond its means but would try to do the best for the people.

He also visited the Ang San King Welfare Clinic Centre, which before the movement control order, used to offer free consultation services every Friday from 8pm to 10pm.
