KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to remove approved permits (AP) for importing chicken eggs to stabilise supply and prices in the market.

Bumiputera Retailers Association president Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said that by doing so, more people, including the hypermarkets, could directly import the eggs.

Price of eggs would be competitively set, leading to lower prices, he said.

“More supply means healthier competition between the sellers and the end result is lower prices.

“At the moment, we are not sure who the government had given the AP to, but it is not us,” he said when contacted today.

The Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (Mydin) managing director said the direct import of eggs could see a minimum reduction of 10 per cent in terms of its price.

The shortfall in egg supply in the country was reduced to just one million in December last year, after the government allowed eggs to be imported as a temporary measure, he said.

Mohamad also said that the supplies of eggs and chicken would stabilise soon.

Ameer, however, disagreed and said the supplies of Grade A, B and C egges remained lacking in the market.

“To be honest egg supplies have not improved at all, especially the Grade A to C ones. I hope the government will act soon.”
