‘Mop in microwave’ convenience store slapped with warning
KUALA LUMPUR: The convenience store that went viral for the “mop in the microwave” incident has been slapped with a warning and notice by the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Division.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the division had conducted an investigation into the incident.
Yesterday, a video of a male staff member using a mop to clean the convenience store’s microwave made its rounds on social media, causing uproar among users who questioned the cleanliness of the place.
The ministry, through the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Health Department’s Food Safety and Quality Division, conducted an investigation and identified the location of the convenience store involved in Jalan Sultan Sulaiman, Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur, today.
“The premises (owner) admitted the mistake made by the employee involved, who is a foreigner.
“Two notices under Section 32(B) of the Food Act 1983 have been issued for failure to maintain tools in good condition, cleanliness, as well as sale of food beyond the expiry date.

“A stern warning was also issued to the premises (owner) and the employee not to repeat acts that could cause disease to spread due to unsafe food handling,” he told the “New Straits Times” today.
Following the incident, Dr Noor Hisham urged the public, particularly food operators, to carry out their responsibilities to ensure food safety.
“The action of neglecting aspects of safety and hygiene involving food could cause water and foodborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery, Hepatitis A and food poisoning.”
Dr Noor Hisham said 51 eateries and food premises were instructed to close after inspections by the Health Ministry this month.
He said of the 1,758 food premises inspected in January, 51 were ordered closed, adding that 750 32 (B) notices were issued.
“The ministry will continue to carry out routine inspections of food premises in addition to Op Premis to improve compliance with the regulations.

A total of 78, 207 food premises were inspected last year, 1,439 of which were instructed to close under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.
