Malaysia to present ‘Kain Telepuk’ to King Charles III as coronation gift
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kain Telepuk, the rich fabric usually worn by Malay nobility some 300 years ago, will be Malaysia’s gift to King Charles III in conjunction with his coronation on May 6.
The Telepuk is a traditional technique involving the process of gilding the woven fabric with gold leaf.
Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah said the Kain Telepuk is currently being done by master craftsman or ‘adiguru’ Norhaiza Noordin.
The coronation logo is expected to be gilded on the woven fabric.
The Kain Telepuk is widely used during the reign of the Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-haj (1938–1960) and worn by his consort Tengku Ampuan Jemaah.
Norhaiza will be one of the master craftsmen that Tunku Azizah will be bringing with her to the London Craft Week from May 6 to 14, which also coincides with King Charles III’s coronation day.
