SHAH ALAM: The lorry driver who crashed into a roadblock that led to the death of a police corporal has a prior record of rioting with a deadly weapon.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin (pic) said checks revealed the driver had a prior record under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

“He is currently under remand, while investigations are carried out under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless driving.

“We are also investigating the man for flouting the movement control order (MCO) at the time of the incident,” he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters on Tuesday (May 5).

On Sunday (May 3), the police corporal on duty died after a suspected drunk driver crashed into him at a roadblock at Lekas Highway.

The victim has been identified as Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail, 31, who was attached to the Kajang district police headquarters.

He was buried earlier Monday (May 4) in Ipoh, Perak.

At his funeral, Selangor CID chief SAC Datuk Fadzil Ahmad said that Safwan was a symbol of loyalty and sacrifice by police personnel in serving the country.

SAC Fadzil said he was overcome with emotions when handing over the Panji Sang Saka Biru (Royal Malaysia Police Pennant) to Safwan’s father, who was a commando with VAT69 in Ulu Kinta, Perak.
