Floods: Over 6,000 victims evacuated in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood evacuees in Sabah has risen to 6,313 people as of 8am on Thursday (Jan 26).

State Civil Defence department information showed that the number of victims quickly increased from a hundred over people on Wednesday afternoon, to thousands later in the night.



These victims from 2,187 families are from the districts of Paitan, Pitas, Kudat, Kota Marudu and Lahad Datu.

Kota Marudu currently has the highest number of evacuees at 4,784 people from a total of 1,731 households.

A total of 26 relief centres have been opened to house all flood victims.



According to the department, the number of evacuees are increasing in Paitan but gradually decreasing in Lahad Datu whereas the other areas remain static for now.

Heavy rains, which started about a week ago in some parts of the affected districts, are expected to continue until Thursday evening.
