KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh’s private secretary, Nor Miswary Ramli, has come to her defence after she was accused of Christian evangelism and misusing her ministerial powers.

Nor Miswary, who has worked with Yeoh since 2012, said Yeoh had never tried to persuade or influence him to convert to any religion.

“As a Kedahan who is well-educated in religion, I can proudly say that Hannah upholds tolerance and good values.

“Throughout the years of working with her, not even once did she try to preach her religion.

“She respects Islam, which I have been faithful to since I was born,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday.

On March 14, Yeoh denied that her ministry’s Jom Ziarah programme was trying to peddle other religions to Muslims.

Yeoh lodged a police report through her aide on March 13 against blogger Badrul Hisham Shaharin for allegedly linking the programme to evangelism.

Nor Miswary also lodged a police report at the Presint 7 police station in Putrajaya yesterday over a remark by Kelantan Pas Youth chief Kamal Mohamed accusing Yeoh of using her power as a minister to deny the state its right to host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.

“This week, Hannah Yeoh has been a victim of slander because of the work she is doing as the youth and sports minister.

“What is most embarrassing is that the slander was made by those who claim to be Muslims and Malays from a party that fights for the nation and uses religion as the basis of its struggles.

“I defend Hannah Yeoh not because I want to fight those from Pas who slander her, but because she deserves to be defended,” the DAP Shah Alam secretary said.

Yesterday, Yeoh denied allegations that she abused her power to prevent Kelantan from hosting Sukma.

She said the state executive council had agreed to host the event in 2028 so that it had more time to prepare.
