The domestic trade and cost of living ministry says it is aware of complaints from the public following a hike in the price of imported rice.

PETALING JAYA: The government will soon launch an initiative to sell reasonably priced rice to help the underprivileged, says the domestic trade and cost of living ministry.

Its deputy minister, Fuziah Salleh, said the mechanism for the scheme known as “Jualan Rahmah Beras” would be announced soon.

She said while padi and rice came under the agriculture and food security ministry’s purview, her ministry was aware of complaints from the public following a hike in the price of imported rice.

“So we will look for a way, within the ministry’s powers, to resolve this matter as well as the alleged shortage of locally produced rice,” she said at the Dewan Rakyat.

Fuziah said this when wrapping up the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) mid-term review.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously said that the price of locally produced white rice would not increase, despite the price of imported rice increasing by 36%.
