Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal recently challenged Anwar Ibrahim to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that only Malays can become the prime minister.

KUCHING: An aide to a Sarawak MP has filed a police report against Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal over his recent call for the prime ministership to be restricted to Malays only.

Soo Tien Ren, an aide to Sarawak DAP chief and Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, filed the report at the Kuching police headquarters. He was accompanied by two party colleagues.

The trio called for the authorities to investigate the former deputy minister for issuing an “incendiary” statement.

In a statement, Soo said Wan Fayhsal’s remarks blatantly discriminated against the Chinese, Indian, and the indigenous communities in Sabah and Sarawak.

“If such rhetoric doesn’t warrant police intervention, does it imply that anyone can speak without consequences?

“Is he implying that the majority can freely discriminate against minorities, leading to (the) tyranny of the majority?” he added.

Wan Fayhsal, who is the Machang MP, recently challenged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to use his two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that only Malays can become the prime minister.

But Soo said that if the Federal Constitution was amended to exclude minorities from holding the prime minister’s post, it would send a signal to the minority groups that they do not belong in this country.

“Where else can our citizens who are of Iban, Bidayuh, Chinese and Indian (ethnicities) call home if not Malaysia?”

Soo also said the Federal Constitution did not discriminate against any minority group and that the nation’s founding fathers have emphasised a “spirit of meritocracy” in drafting it to ensure equal opportunities and to safeguard the interests of marginalised groups.

He added it was “regrettable” that Wan Fayhsal did not see the error in his ways.

“And, in recent days, has consistently reinforced his misguided arguments.”
