Ask IGP to name ‘cop’ who approached scholar at KLIA, NGO tells IPCC
PETALING JAYA: The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) must get Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain to investigate and publicly name the “policeman” who allegedly approached political scientist Ahmet T Kuru at the KLIA departure lounge last Wednesday, says an NGO.
In a statement, Citizens Against Enforced Disappearances (Caged) called for IPCC chairman Zolkopli Dahlan not to be the “chief cosmetician” for the police, but demand that Razarudin treat Kuru’s allegation seriously instead.
Caged spokesman Rama Ramanathan was commenting on Razarudin’s response to an FMT report in which Kuru alleged that he was close to being arrested at KLIA.
Razarudin denied Kuru’s claim and said the police had “no issue with him and had no intention to arrest him”.
Kuru had claimed that he was approached by people who identified themselves as policemen while he was waiting to board a flight to Lahore.

He also alleged that a “tall plainclothes policeman” sat next to him and said the police had been informed that he was a terrorist.
”I told him it was a lie,” Kuru told FMT. He then took a selfie with the “policeman”, which he has uploaded to his Facebook page.
Rama said the denial by Razarudin of Kuru’s claim, “without the depth of investigation warranted”, proved that there was a need for independent oversight of the police.
“Will Zolkipli press the IGP to investigate and publicly name the person in the photo with Kuru?” he said.
Rama also criticised the police for their “ineffectiveness” in addressing the issue of forced disappearances in Malaysia.
“It is an undeniable fact that people disappear in Malaysia, and the police cannot, will not, or have failed to find them,” he said.
He cited the cases involving activist Amri Che Mat and pastor Raymond Koh, as well as the forced “return” to Turkey of Alettin Duman and Tamer Tıbık.
