Hamzah Zainudin says Bersatu has not fired Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal because it does not want to give him the chance to become a ‘free agent’.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin has urged Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal to resign following the latter’s move to throw his support behind Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

“If he really is as great as has been said, he should be willing to resign and prove that the people will stay with him.

“Recontest, and we’ll see if the people’s mandate is with him or PN,” he said on Malaysia Gazette’s Skop MG programme.

Hamzah said Bersatu had not fired the MP because it did not want to give him the chance to become a “free agent”.

“We want to pressure him. Other people who have left the party, like Gua Musang (Azizi Abu Naim), have not said as much as he has. Bukit Gantang talks a big game,” he said.

On Syed Hussin’s statement that several party MPs supported Anwar, Hamzah questioned if “bribes” had been given. He added that Anwar was not confident in the support for his government.

“Bukit Gantang has become the spokesman for the prime minister. Who started this movement?

“This is what I’m wondering about. They say they have a two-thirds majority… but they are taking more (MPs)… and now there is a movement to draw more support.

“They should not be afraid if they already have a majority,” he said.

On Monday, Syed Hussin said seven to eight MPs would release statements on their support for Anwar, but did not reveal their identities.

He had previously declared his support for Anwar, saying he was disappointed in PN’s refusal to negotiate for opposition MP allocations.

The two-term MP said he had not been threatened or pressured by anyone into making his decision.

His move followed that of Gua Musang MP Azizi, Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Zahari Kechik (Jeli), who said it was for the sake of their constituents.
