Umno will punish MPs who join other political pacts, says Puad

PETALING JAYA: The existing anti-hopping law and Umno’s constitution will ensure Umno MPs are punished for participating in external political pacts, says Puad Zarkashi.

Taking to Facebook, the Umno Supreme Council member noted that several MPs from the party have been accused of being involved in the alleged “Dubai Move”.

Saying that Umno was not free from “political scams” and that there are attempts to sow chaos within the party, he pointed out that Clause 20.11 of the Umno constitution clearly states that an MP will lose his party membership if he joins a political pact that does not involve Umno.

“So, if there are any Umno MPs involved, their efforts are pointless,” he said.

Puad said any errant Umno MP would also have to face the anti-hopping law, which would render their seats vacant and thus, require that a by-election be held.

“They are also bound to a statutory declaration that mandates them to pay RM100 million (for defecting).

“Enough is enough with the 10 MPs who signed different SDs after the 15th general election (GE15). Those traitors need to be severely punished,” he added.

Following the outcome of the GE15, which saw a hung Parliament, it was reported that 10 MPs from Barisan Nasional (BN) signed SDs backing Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

Puad’s comments follow Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s statement on Friday that the amendment to Umno’s constitution last year prevents its MPs from defying party decisions, including lending support to someone for the post of prime minister.

Earlier last week, PAS election director Sanusi Nor claimed that it was not wrong for the opposition to take advantage of loopholes in the anti-hopping law to attract government MPs to support PN.

The “Dubai Move” is an alleged plot involving MPs from both the government and opposition to topple the unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
