PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is proposing the establishment of four new state seats, says coalition secretary-general Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said this follows the Sarawak government’s decision to consider reviewing the number of state constituencies this year, Berita Harian reported.

“We have discussed with all GPS representatives several times and have agreed on the proposal to establish new constituencies at a later date.

“We’re proposing four state seats in the Kanowit, Kapit and Hulu Rajang parliamentary constituencies, but it is up to the Election Commission.

“These areas are large, which is why (we need) four,” he said.

On Saturday, Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said the state government would consider reviewing state electoral boundaries later this year.

He said the proposal includes creating seats with mixed demographics to ensure representation from all communities.

In January, EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh confirmed that Sarawak is ripe for delineation, as the previous redrawing of electoral boundaries was in 2015.

He said delineation can only be carried out once every eight years, or if there are changes to the composition and number of the state assemblymen.
