Analysts have played down the significance of PKR’s recent reshuffle of state chiefs, which saw Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepping aside.

PETALING JAYA: Political analysts see no major shift within the ranks of PKR’s central leadership despite the recent move to replace deputy president Rafizi Ramli and vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as state chiefs.

“The decision to replace Rafizi and Nik Nazmi was to allow them to focus on their duties as ministers, and to replace Sangkar Rasam due to the demands of Sabah’s grassroots,” Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia told FMT.

“The replacement of these leaders is not a major issue. It does not affect the party’s current political situation.”

On Sunday, several new state PKR chiefs were appointed, with Rafizi and Nik Nazmi relinquishing their duties.

Rafizi, who also serves as the economy minister, was replaced in the federal territories by Azman Abidin, political secretary to prime minister and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim. He was replaced in Johor by Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.

Similarly, Nik Nazmi, the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, saw his roles in Kelantan and Terengganu go to Suparadi Noor and Ahmad Nazri Yusof respectively.

Mustapha Sakmud meanwhile replaced Sangkar in Sabah. Last month, Kota Marudu division chief Sazalye Donol said 15 Sabah division chiefs had unanimously called for Sangkar to step down as state chairman over dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Mazlan said Rafizi’s influence and progression within the party was not affected as he would likely retain his position as deputy president.

“Rafizi’s existing influence within the party is strong enough for him to keep this role. However, it would be difficult for him if he were to challenge Anwar as party leader.

“This is because Anwar’s performance as prime minister has been outstanding, making it difficult for any other leader to challenge or match his capabilities,” he said.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia also played down the significance of the reshuffle, saying it showed the party’s maturity in handling complex political affairs.

“Rafizi’s removal had been anticipated since his heart problem became public knowledge. It doesn’t make sense to burden him with state-level responsibilities when he’s already a federal minister,” he said.

Rafizi suffered a heart attack last October and underwent spinal surgery earlier this year.

Fauzi said Sangkar’s removal meanwhile showed that Anwar had listened to the grouses of the grassroots.

He said it also highlighted the growing confidence within the party to expose up-and-coming leaders to higher levels of authority.

“As more leaders are exposed to leadership challenges at the national level, it will prepare the party to defend its ground in the upcoming general election,” he said.
