MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons declared their assets according to the set timeframe.

PUTRAJAYA: The two older sons of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad have declared their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said Mirzan and Mokhzani have submitted their asset declarations within the timeframe provided by the anti-graft agency.

“However, the investigation team is still coordinating with their lawyers (on a few matters),” he told a press conference here today.

“What’s important is that they have declared their assets.”

MACC previously granted an extension to Mirzan and Mokhzani to declare their assets but did not disclose the length of the extension given.

The brothers were ordered by MACC in January to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Mahathir became the prime minister. The deadline, initially set for February, had since been extended twice.
Mirzan was asked to declare his assets as part of an investigation into information from the Panama Papers report and his business activities involving the sale and purchase of GLCs.

Meanwhile, Mokhzani is being investigated under the MACC Act and Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

On a separate matter, Azam said MACC is not involved in the police’s investigation into Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH).

Based on the ongoing investigation, he said, MACC has not identified any element of corruption and will leave the case to the police.

Last week, it was reported that 402 children – 201 boys and 201 girls aged between one and 17 – were rescued during police raids on 20 children’s homes across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan linked to GISBH, alleged to be exploiting children under the guise of religious charity.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said 171 individuals, including instructors, dormitory guardians and heads of educational centres, aged between 17 and 64, were also arrested to assist in the investigation.
