Bersatu and PAS presidents Muhyiddin Yassin and Abdul Hadi Awang had faced calls to step down following Perikatan Nasional’s loss in Kuala Kubu Baharu.

PETALING JAYA: An analyst says it would be difficult for Muhyiddin Yassin and Abdul Hadi Awang, the leaders of Bersatu and PAS, to step down from their posts after Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) defeat in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election last weekend.

Speaking to FMT, Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin of Universiti Teknologi Mara said every party needs to be led by influential leaders.

“The Malaysian political landscape continues to be dominated by leaders who are ‘giants’ and ‘heavyweights’.

“It would be difficult for any political leader to relinquish their position given the foundation of these parties on hierarchy and grassroots support,” he said.

Yesterday, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said Muhyiddin and Hadi should step down after the results of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, which saw Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Pang Sock Tao receiving 14,000 votes – a 3,869-vote majority over PN candidate Khairul Azhari Saut who obtained 10,131.

The other candidates – independent Nyau Ke Xin and Hafizah Zainuddin of Parti Rakyat Malaysia – lost their deposits.

Zaid said Muhyiddin and Hadi, both 76 years old, should make way for younger leaders with fresh ideas.

“Looking back, PH won big because PN had nothing to offer; absolutely nothing. The leaders are very old, not just in age but in ideas (too),” Zaid said in a post on X.

Muhyiddin is PN chairman while Hadi is one of his deputies.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Muhyiddin was seen as lacking the spirit and vision to lead Bersatu, and should be replaced with a leader who could breathe fresh life into the party.

He said Bersatu had many potential leaders such as Hamzah Zainudin, Azmin Ali, Radzi Jidin, and Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

As for PAS, Azmi said he would not be surprised if Hadi continued to lead the party, which relies on its grassroots strength.

“The mission or vision of (other) PAS leaders doesn’t differ much from Hadi’s because that’s been their leadership style since the beginning,” he added.

Bersatu and PAS leaders had closed ranks around their presidents in the aftermath of the polls, with Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal saying both men were still needed as they played a crucial role in maintaining unity in PN.

“We can agree with political commentators who say there are weaknesses and shortcomings in terms of PN’s strategy and approach for the by-election, but this (calling for Muhyiddin and Hadi to resign) is not the way,” Wan Fayhsal said in a Facebook post.

“They (Muhyiddin and Hadi) should continue leading, while Bersatu and PAS should reassess our political approach and strategies according to our own framework.”

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also defended the two leaders, dismissing concerns about their age.

“If age was a factor, I would point out that almost all party leaders, including the prime minister, are old. These leaders serve as an inspiration for the party’s future generations,” he said.
