KUALA LUMPUR – None have shown up at the protest to demand the resignation of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as Umno president in a bid to save the Malay party.

A check by Sinar Daily at the venue of the planned rally — Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) — revealed that only the police and media personnel were present at the location.

Dang Wangi Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Nor Delhan told the press that there was no permit or information regarding the rally

“For now, we (polices) are doing our duty to make sure the public safety is maintained.

“We have a total of 30 team stationed, that’s a total of 260 police officers who are currently monitoring PWTC and Menara Dato’ Onn,” said Nor Delhan.

Earlier today, there was another rally held at PWTC but instead of demanding Zahid’s resignation, the attendees at the morning rally showed solidarity for him to carry on as party president.

Zahid had drawn a lot flak from a lot Umno grasroots following the party’s disasterous electoral performance in the 15th General Election on November 19; where the party only won 30 out of the 222 parliamentary seats.

While the groundswell against him has been growing, party’s Supreme Council has yesterday issued a statement, announcing their support for Zahid to continue being Umno president.
