PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister, stated today, that his decision to hold the 15th General Election (GE15) last month was correct.
However, no huge flood happened during that period, even though certain quarters expected it.
“No flood happened, but only I was accused, but alhamdulillah, Allah SWT is on my side,” he said during a press conference after chairing the Central Disaster Management Committee meeting, today.
Zahid said the continual heavy rainfall is expected to cause flooding beginning this Saturday.
“Preparedness is underway with coordination with various ministries, departments, and agencies at the state and district levels, as well as temporary flood relief centres (PPS),” he added.
Previously, 12 ministers from the Perikatan Nasional coalition wrote to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to express their opposition to hold the 15th General Election this year.
The letter, received by the palace, cited, among others, the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s (MetMalaysia) forecast of heavy rain and floods due to a monsoon transition during the period, which could coincide with the general election season if Parliament is dissolved.
During the election period, several polling centers, including some in rural areas in Sarawak, were hit by floods. GE15 was held on Nov 19.
Due to inclement weather at Sarawak’s Baram Parliament, voting was temporarily halted and resumed on November 21.
