‘Malaysian Malaysia’ not in violation of Federal Constitution, says DAP man

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader has defended the “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan in the party’s constitution, saying it does not violate the Federal Constitution.

Sheikh Omar Ali, a member of DAP’s central executive committee, said the slogan should not be perceived as a threat to the diverse cultural and religious aspects of the country’s multiethnic society.

“There is no issue with ‘Malaysian Malaysia’ as that spirit aligns with the essence of the Federal Constitution,” he told FMT.

“Elements, such as (Malay) language, Malay privileges, religion and more are already explicitly provided in the Federal Constitution.”

Sheikh Omar also said the formation of DAP was in compliance with the requisites for the registration of an organisation as well as the Federal Constitution.

“Until today, DAP operates as a legitimate political party and participates in general elections,” he said.

Earlier today, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said his party terminated its cooperation with DAP due to the latter’s insistence on PAS embracing the principles of secularism, a concept embedded in DAP’s constitution.

The two parties were formerly allies in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

Yesterday, Umno Supreme Council member Nur Jazlan Mohamed urged DAP to drop the “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan from its party constitution to gain the support of Malay voters.

Nur Jazlan said the Malays were hesitant to support DAP because of its secular state agenda, which “contradicts Islamic and Malay principles”.
